SUMMARY:Ballet Kelowna taqeš and Other Works
DESCRIPTION:SHOW DETAILS\nLocation: Lester Centre of the Arts \nDoors open at 7:00pm\, show starts at 7:30pm – 9:30pm \n\n\n\nProudly presented by the Lester Centre\, taqəš and Other Works features a stunning line-up of signature works from Ballet Kelowna’s contemporary ballet repertoire. With Cameron Fraser-Monroe’s powerful and compelling taqəš [tawKESH]\, Guillaume Côté’s mesmerizing Bolero\, and Fraser-Monroe’ satirical The Cowboy Act Suite\, this high-energy program promises to please a wide range of spectators. \nCameron Fraser-Monroe brings his classical ballet training\, knowledge of traditional Coast Salish\, Grass\, and Hoop Dance\, and experience as a contemporary dancer to taqəš [tawKESH]\, which means “to return something” in Ayajuthem\, the language belonging to the Homalco\, Klahoose\, K’omoks and Tla’amin Nations. Set to several songs by Polaris Prize-winning composer and singer Jeremy Dutcher\, taqəš follows the traditional story “Raven Returns the Water\,” centred around ῤoho (raven) and walθ (frog). \nNext\, National Ballet of Canada Choreographic Associate Guillaume Côté brings strength and fragility to a fascinating interpretation of the beloved Bolero by Maurice Ravel\, one of music’s most famous and identifiable melodies. A “riveting tour de force” (Dance Magazine)\, Bolero (2012) features breath-taking lifts and virtuosic choreography. \nRounding out the program\, audiences will be transported to the Wild West in Cameron Fraser-Monroe’s The Cowboy Act Suite\, a work that explores the dichotomy between “Cowboys and Indians” set to music by Mohawk singer/songwriter Tom Wilson.  While these caricatures have been portrayed on pages\, stages\, and in films\, they are often penned from a colonial perspective. Fraser-Monroe’s intuitive take on the swashbuckling strut of the Cowboy informs this intellectual unpacking of a one-sided lens and flips the script to ask\, what happens when an Indian directs the Cowboys through their history? \nBallet Kelowna gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Canada Council for the Arts\, the BC Arts Council\, the Province of British Columbia\, the City of Kelowna\, the Government of Canada\, the Central Okanagan Foundation\, and the Thomas Alan Budd Foundation.

SUMMARY:Oktopus
DESCRIPTION:SHOW DETAILS\nLocation: Lester Centre of the Arts \nDoors open at 7:00pm\, show starts at 7:30pm – 9:30pm \n\n\n\nAcclaimed with numerous awards\, Oktopus is a major presence on the Canadian world music scene\, with over 250 performances to its credit at home and abroad. The group is primarily devoted to klezmer\, distinguished by a novel approach that incorporates various components of the classical and Quebecois repertoire\, with some jazz and Balkan accents. The eight virtuoso musicians offer festive\, high-energy performances\, at once melancholic and profound\, sprinkled with humour and spiced with narrative\, in which original compositions and finely-crafted arrangements combine with improvisation. Its members’ complicity\, shared passion\, and hard work are what makes each of their performances so memorable – whether on stage\, in the street\, on a ship\, in a hot air balloon\, or in your living room. \nOktopus is simply….spectentacular!

SUMMARY:Alex Cuba
DESCRIPTION:SHOW DETAILS\nLocation: Lester Centre of the Arts \nDoors open at 7:00pm\, show starts at 7:30pm – 9:30pm \n\n\n\nThough raised in Artemisa\, an hour outside of Havana\, Alex Cuba’s artistry is as far-flung as the place he has settled and lived for over 15 years: Smithers\, BC. His music at once incorporates his roots and is a unique amalgam of styles\, having collaborated with artists ranging from Jason Mraz to Ron Sexsmith and Nelly Furtado; and bringing together melodies\, popsoul hooks and rock chords in songs that may seem to bear little resemblance to traditional Cuban form. \nA forward-thinking\, indie-minded artist\, Alex has amassed a steadily-growing following among critics and fans. With over 20 awards and nominations to his name\, including 4 Latin Grammys\, 2 Juno Awards\, and 3 Grammy nominations. He continues to make music at an astounding pace\, releasing three albums in the last four years: Sublime (2019)\, Mendo (2021)\, and El Swing Que Yo Tengo (2023). His growing boyd of work defines a unique musical place in the Latin diaspora. \n“He’s like Marvin Gaye singing soul to a new generation.”\n~ Boston Globe \n“Alex Cuba is a ground breaking figure\, which may say something about the process of giving roots music a cosmopolitan polish.”\n~ Nashville Scene \n“a master at conveying emotions through songs.”\n~ Vancouver Sun

SUMMARY:Ballet Jorgen's "Cinderella"
DESCRIPTION:This ballet by Bengt Jorgen is an innovative take on the classic fairy tale. Jorgen’s choreography balances the fairy tale elements of the story with a contemporary treatment of Cinderella and her family relationships. Returning to the original Russian tradition of having women perform the roles of the stepsisters\, Jorgen builds a more realistic and human look at Cinderella and her circumstances\, and then uses these scens to both counterpoint and highlight the magical aspects of the story. \nA classical ballet with modern and dramatic sensibilities\, “Cinderella” will transport you to a world both familiar and new.
