SUMMARY:Alaria and the Mountain
DESCRIPTION:The VYF present Alaria and the Mountain\, a music story about a young fiddler seeking purpose and belonging in in an unfamiliar mountain town.\n\nAlaria grew up on the shores of Lonely Lighthouse Island. She grew up strong like a sapling exposed to a bit of weather. But the years hurried along and Alaria was no longer a child. She was\, in fact\, a young adult. As with young adults of pretty much every kind\, Alaria felt the need to roam—to leave Lonely Lighthouse Island—to go and see the world for herself. And\, of course\, she brought her fiddle.\n\nSo it was that Alaria found herself in an unfamiliar town set against a backdrop of towering snow-capped mountains. She soon discovers that the town harbours an owly shopkeeper and community of precocious young fiddlers that change her life’s trajectory.\n\nAlaria and the Mountain is a musical story produced by Smithers-based Valley Youth Fiddlers under the direction of Leslie-Jean MacMillan.\n\nThe Valley Youth Fiddlers are a highly accomplished ensemble of more than 60 musicians from ages 5 to more than 55 that play fiddle\, viola\, piano\, guitar\, mandolin\, bass\, drums\, accordion\, saxophone\, and trombone. The group combines musical performance with compelling storytelling by Patrick Williston and original illustrations by artist Emily Wilson.\n\nThose who enjoyed Alaria’s Fiddle\, a 2017 touring production by the Valley Youth Fiddlers\, might remember the high-spirited young Alaria. Alaria was a child back then. Now in her twenties\, she has landed a job high on a mountain keeping watch in a fire tower\, a setting that reminds her of the lighthouse of her childhood home. But the high mountain realm is a very different place than the coast\, and she has much to learn.\n\nAlaria and the Mountain explores themes of self-discovery\, of being a newcomer\, of overcoming the fear of isolation in nature\, and of community and connection through the sharing of music.\nThe performance features music rich with woven harmonies written and arranged for the Valley Youth Fiddlers by Canada’s leading contemporary fiddlers including North American Irish Fiddle Champion and Grand North American Old-Time Fiddle Champion Kyle Burghout\, multiinstrumentalist and Juno-award winner Adrian Dolan\, North Shore Celtic Ensemble director Gabriel Dubreil\, Lea Kirstein of the celebrated Toronto folk band Medusa\, BC fiddle tradition-bearer and multiple award winning teacher Daniel Lapp\, Canadian Folk Music Award winners Jaron Freeman-Fox and Oliver Schroer\, and Juno nominated multi-instrumentalist and master fiddler James Stephens.\n\nExperience the magic of Northern BC’s very own Valley Youth Fiddlers and be prepared to be swept away by the spell-binding performance of Alaria and the Mountain.

SUMMARY:Coastal Conversations: Film Series
DESCRIPTION:The North Coast Ecology Centre and the BC Environmental Film Festival are collaborating to bring some amazing nature films to Prince Rupert and the North! \nThe films will be shown at the Lester Centre of the Arts on March 5th\, March 19th and April 2nd.\nTickets are $15/night or $35 for all three nights. \nApril 2nd Film: Grizzly Rewild\n \n\n“Grizzly Rewild” (Canada\, 2024\, 52 minutes) showcases five orphaned grizzly cubs being reared at the world’s only grizzly rewilding facility in Smithers\, British Columbia and then follows them being released back to the wild wearing GPS collars. In a ground-breaking study\, eminent bear biologist\, Dr Lana Ciarniello tracks the progress of these bears over the next year to see whether they can survive without a mother to teach or protect them. It’s the first time rewilded grizzlies have ever been filmed readapting to life in the wild. If they survive – grizzly rewilding could become widely adopted and help rebuild North America’s declining grizzly populations.  Grizzly Rewild | 2024 BCEFF\n\nNCECS memberships will be available at each event.\nNorth Coast Ecology Centre Society

SUMMARY:The Arrogant Worms
DESCRIPTION:The Arrogant Worms have spent over three decades making fun of a big dumb world. Their songs have been played on the radio\, the internet\, and in outer space (on the space shuttle Endeavour). The Worms began at Queen’s University in 1991 when some members of the student cabaret group\, The Queen’s Players\, started writing songs and sketches for the campus radio station CFRC. Soon the group became The Arrogant Worms (Chris Patterson\, Mike McCormick\, and Trevor Strong) who have since toured ceaselessly across Canada (and select other parts of the world)\, released 14 albums including their latest\, “Canadian Famous”\, recorded with longtime friend and multi-instrumentalist Aleksi Campagne and supported generously by their fervent (and occasionally feverish) fanbase.

\nMarch 5th Film: Three Short Films \n\nA tribute to the endangered Southern Resident killer whales and the scientist who began the census to protect them. Counting Orca (USA\, 2025\, 26 minutes) is a cinematic archive of a community fighting to survive against the odds of time and the clock of life itself. This story sheds light on the early research efforts to learn about the southern residents and the hope that Dr. Ken Balcomb created for their future. Counting Orca | BCEFF Online 2025\n‘The Medzih Story: Restoring a Caribou Landscape’ (Canada\, 2024\, 20 minutes) is a short film documenting the work one indigenous community is doing to help restore decades of industrial impacts on the land base as a mechanism to help stabilize boreal caribou populations. Located in Treaty 8 Territory in present day northeast British Columbia\, the Fort Nelson First Nation find themselves at the ‘tip of the spear’ when it comes to repairing linear disturbances in caribou habitat. As Dene and Cree speaking peoples who have occupied this land since time immemorial\, the initiative is an example of their everlasting responsibility to respect\, and care for the land and animals that have sustained them forever.  The Medzih Story: Restoring a Caribou Landscape | BCEFF Online 2025\nHope in the Anthropocene (Canada\, 2025\, 23 minutes) delves into the lives of passionate environmentalists in British Columbia as they confront climate anxiety and navigate their complex relationship with hope amidst an increasingly fragile ecosystem.  Hope in the Anthropocene | BCEFF Online 2025\n\nNCECS memberships will be available at each event.\nNorth Coast Ecology Centre Society
