SUMMARY:Public Budget Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Budgeting is happening a little earlier for the City this year – bumped up to Fall from Spring to enable City staff to proceed with purchasing for the upcoming year and to provide additional information to the community to inform their own budgets. This public budget session has been scheduled as an information sharing opportunity with the community for you to come and hear about the City’s priorities and constraints. Want to know more about our major plans for waterline replacements? Changes to revenues and expenses? The proposed tax rate based on planned services and capital projects for 2024? Details on specific proposed projects within the City’s budget? This is your opportunity! \nPrince Rupert City Council will receive the 2024 Proposed Budget at a Special Meeting on November 6th\, where the full budget/document will be provided and released. This meeting on the Thursday following is a first opportunity for the public to come and ask questions about proposed spending. In addition to this public session will be a second opportunity at the November 14th Council meeting – after which Council can make their decisions with respect to approved spending for 2024. Can’t attend the session but have questions and/or want to weigh in? Check out our Balancing Act public budget software that allows you to directly weigh in on spending priorities (link to be provided after November 6th)\, email finance@princerupert.ca or call (250) 627 0935. \nVenue: Coast Mountain College Atrium \nOrganizer: City of Prince Rupert

SUMMARY:A Night at the Movies
DESCRIPTION:RICEBOY SLEEPS   –    Wednesday\, Oct. 25th\, 7 pm\n\nIn the 1990s\, a young widow named So-young (Choi Seung-yoon) moves from South Korea to Canada with her young son\, Dong-hyun (Dohyun Noel Hwang). Neither of them speaks English very well or understands the cultures of their new home. But this is where they live now\, where Dong-hyun will grow up\, and they’ll make the best of it. \nVancouver director Anthony Shim distinguishes himself as a storyteller of piercing honesty and remarkable specificity\, unpacking the lives of So-young and Dong-hyun over a decade of change and adaptation. (Dong-hyun is played as a teen by Ethan Hwang.) \nRiceboy Sleeps lays out its interwoven stories simply\, shifting between the different perspectives of its protagonists. Poignantly capturing Dong-hyun’s loneliness and frustration alongside So-young’s isolation and sacrifices\, Shim keeps the film compassionate and poetic \nAs to why it is called Riceboy Sleeps – In the Q&A session at Red Sea International Film Festival\, the director said\, in response to the reason for choosing the name of the movie\, that he always listens to music while writing his films\, at that time he was listening to an album called “Riceboy Sleeps” by Jon Thor Birgisson\, which prompted him to use it as a placeholder title\, but the title stuck and became the definite title.\n\nThe movies take place at the Prince Rupert Cineplex at 7 p.m. with the doors opening at 6:30.  You do not buy a ticket through the Cineplex system\, rather you come to our PRCAC table outside whichever theatre our movie is scheduled to be shown in\,  with $12 in cash (we don’t have the means to accept debit or credit at this time)\, and if you can bring the correct change it would really help.  Imagine if everyone comes with a twenty-dollar bill.

SUMMARY:54•40: Two Nights with a West Coast Band
DESCRIPTION:54•40 is…\nNeil Osborne -vocals/guitar\nBrad Merritt -bass\nMatt Johnson- drums\nDave Genn -guitars /keys/backing vocals\nDavid “Oz” Osborne -organ/backing vocals \nOver the course of 40+ years of performing and recording\, 54•40 has not only made their mark on the Canadian music industry\, but the entire cultural landscape. Led by chief songwriter Neil Osborne\, 54•40 has carved out a legacy of gold and platinum albums and an outstanding reputation for their live performances that carries through to this day. With decades of hit songs and more in the making\, the secret to 54•40’s longevity is their ability to redefine and reinvent themselves. \nA 54•40 concert experience gives an understanding of how their songs have touched\, inspired\, and changed people’s lives. For those who have followed the band from their humble beginnings in East Vancouver to younger fans that are just discovering the band’s originality\, 54•40 shows are extraordinary affairs that bridge gaps between generations through a shared love of music. \nThe band is currently preparing for the release of their 2023 album “West Coast Band” which was recorded remotely during the thick of COVID-19 lockdowns. Having come through the hardship with a sense of unity\, the album celebrates the common history they share as band members. \n‍”54•40 is always future thinking\, as a band we’re always expanding our borders\, (after all the name does comes from a border dispute) what we call ‘FUTURE HISTORY’…” ~ Neil Osborne \n‍ \nVenue: Lester Centre of the Arts \nOrganizer: Lester Centre of the Arts

SUMMARY:Drum Circle for Drum Run Adventure Tour
DESCRIPTION:Drum Run is coming to Prince Rupert on September 28th! Take part by joining the drum circle! \nThe Drum Run Adventure Tour\, presented by the Rhythm of Life Society and led by Founder and Executive Director Lyle Povah\, is a 1\,500 km run and 25-city drum circle tour throughout BC. Our mission is to fundraise for the Child Life Department at BC Children’s Hospital. In partnership with BC Children’s Hospital Foundation\, we seek to “Help Kids Shine.” \nAlong with a dedicated team of volunteers\, Lyle\, an international musician\, is leading the tour. Since 1991\, Lyle has brought a weekly drumming and music program to kids\, families and staff at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. He is also an endurance athlete who has run many marathons\, including the Boston and Great Wall of China marathons\, and recently completed the “Vancouver 100”\, a 100-kilometre ultramarathon. \nThe focus of Lyle’s decades-long career as a musician and Drum Circle Facilitator has been on promoting all aspects of health. A Community Drum Circle becomes the container within which people gather together to drum in community. An event like the Drum Run Adventure Tour seeks to bring health and well-being to the community. \nThe Drum Run Adventure Tour launches in Victoria on September 10 and makes its way throughout the province\, returning for a Closing Ceremony at BC Children’s Hospital on November 21. Throughout the tour\, Lyle will run 1\,500 km and stop in 25 communities to host drum circles. \nThe tour will cover four legs:\n1) Vancouver Island (to the West) – Victoria\, Duncan\, Nanaimo\, Qualicum Beach\, Courtenay\, Campbell River\n2) Highway of Tears (to the North) – Prince Rupert\, Terrace\, Hazelton\, Smithers\, Burns Lake\, Fraser Lake\, Vanderhoof\, Prince George\n3) Okanagan (to the East) – Kamloops\, Salmon Arm\, Vernon\, Kelowna\, Penticton\, Osoyoos\n4) Lower Mainland (to the South) – Hope\, Mission (TBC)\, Abbotsford\, Port Moody\, Vancouver \nDrumming and drum circles are fun\, family-friendly events that bring communities together and connect people. In addition\, research shows that drumming strengthens the immune system\, produces feelings of well-being\, and helps release emotional trauma. Drumming also induces deep relaxation\, lowers blood pressure\, and reduces stress. We would like to invite your community to join us to drum and have some fun! \nBy helping The Drum Run Adventure Tour\, your city will be supporting BC Children’s Hospital Foundation in their efforts to improve health care for children in the province. If you would like to know more about our project\, please visit drumrun.org and help us spread the word within your community. Everyone can donate to this cause at gofundme.com/f/help-children-in-british-columbia-to-thrive \nVenue: Moose Lodge #1051\, 745 1st Avenue West\, Prince Rupert\, BC V8J 1B2 \nOrganizer: Drum Run Adventure Tour and Rhythm of Life Society

SUMMARY:National Day for Truth & Reconciliation
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. \nThe day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools\, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. \nBoth the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30. \nOrange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual\, family and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools\, and to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters”.  The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture\, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations. \nOn September 30\, we encourage all Canadians to wear orange to honour the thousands of Survivors of residential schools.
